Cpl. Mason O. Yarbrough Detachment No. 1081
The Cpl. Mason O. Yarbrough Detachment No. 1081 of the Marine Corps League met on Oct. 21 with Richard Bollwerk, commandant, presiding. New members, Glendon Stroup and Mike Reitzel, were welcomed to the detachment.
Committee reports were made. USMC Birthday Ball chairman Leonard Spicer announced that the 229th Birthday Ball will be held at 5 p.m. on Nov. 13 at the Plaza Convention Center in Cape Girardeau. The celebration of the 229th birthday includes patriotic ceremonies, dinner, birthday cake and dancing. Marine retired Col. Jack Jackson will be the guest speaker. The public is invited to attend. Toys for Tots chairman Jim Winder reported on his trip to Washington, D.C., last week. The campaign will kick off this weekend.
The Honor Guard will participate in Veterans Day ceremonies at Notre Dame Regional High School on Nov. 11, as well as the Jackson Veterans Day parade. The Cape Girardeau Veterans Day parade will be on Nov. 13.
The membership voted to donate $250 to the Missouri Veterans Home fund-raising program. In addition, approval was given to place a full-page ad in the MCL state convention program book.
Members John Ryan, Dick Decker, Spicer, Winder and Bollwerk attended the Midwest Division fall conference in Omaha, Neb., Oct. 22 and 23.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Nov. 18 at the VFW Hall.
Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club
The Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club met at the Country Kettle in Biehle for the October meeting. Luella Armstrong presided and led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Violet Reynolds voiced a table prayer.
Dortha Strack from Sunny Hill Gardens in Cape Girardeau was the guest speaker.
Monday's meeting will be held at Delmonico's Restaurant in Jackson with Joyce Peerman as hostess. Program chairman will be Debbie Hay.
Eastside Homemakers
The Eastside Homemakers met on Oct. 20 at Chinatown restaurant in Cape Girardeau. Maxine Southard gave the devotion and the table prayer. Janet Piepenbrok gave a reading titled "Grandma's Apron."
The Nov. 17 meeting will be held at 11 a.m. at Sidetracks restaurant in Jackson.
Xi Nu Phi
The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Oct. 19 at the home of Sandy Ross.
Members are to bring their Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes to the next meeting. The filled shoeboxes will then be taken to a central drop-off location.
Pledge training was held for new members. Members signed up to attend the Exemplar-Preceptor banquet to be held Nov. 18 at the Elks Lodge in Cape Girar-deau.
Convention 2005 T-shirts were distributed. Members made fabric ghosts as part of the program presented by Ross.
Arnsberg 4-H Club
The Arnsberg 4-H Club met Oct. 3 at the home of Ethan Seyer after 4-H Sunday festivities. There were 19 members, 10 leaders and many guests in attendance. Tyler Lappe, vice president, led the meeting. Jacob Light led the pledges.
The club discussed the SEMO District and Altenburg fairs. The club was very well represented at both fairs. Dustin Oehl, treasurer, passed out fair checks to members.
The upcoming new year was discussed and the group began making plans for committees and goals for the new year. Discussion on being a member in good standing was a major topic.
The beef and sheep groups reported on project meetings.
Kristi Seyer gave a short program on how to give a demonstration or illustrated talk.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church Hall in Friedheim. The group will have a Halloween party at this meeting.
St. Mary CWC
The St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met Oct. 21 in the Monsignor Huels Room of the parish office building. The meeting opened with prayer and song led by Dolores Pobst.
Irma Lappe was the only one attending with an October birthday.
Pat Eftink, treasurer, read a thank-you for a donation given to Pennies for Peru.
Dolores Gibbar reported that three bereavement dinners were served since the last meeting.
Georgia Howe and Nancy King presented the program. They told of their trips to Prague and surrounding areas. A number of beautiful scarves and other items, including two very different crucifixes, were on display.
Lorberg Memorial Chapel will donate a wreath to be placed at St. Mary Cemetery.
The quilting ladies are purchasing silverware for small parish dinners.
Shoes for Orphan Souls will be collected through Thanksgiving. This includes socks and shoelaces for ages infant to 18 years, male and female.
Plans are being made for the Christmas bazaar to be held on Dec. 4 and 5 in the gym.
A memorial service for deceased members will be held Nov. 18 preceding the monthly meeting.
Cape Girardeau Area CWU
The Cape Girardeau Area Church Women United met Oct. 1 for a Bible study and boardmeeting at Second Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau. Barbara Swan, member of the host church, led the Bible study.
Joyce King, president, conducted the board meeting. Vera Koen gave the treasurer's report on the balance in the scholarship fund and the collection received at the recent awareness luncheon that was designated for the scholarship fund.
King also reported that 153 school kits, 25 food boxes and 10 paper products kits were received at the luncheon from the various churches and were taken to the Mini Festival of Sharing held Oct. 9.
Meta Siemers reported that 45 school kits for Iraqi schoolchildren and additional school supplies were donated also. An additional offering was taken at the awareness luncheon and was used at the CROP Walk on Oct. 17. A donation was given to the local Alzheimer's unit as part of the local giving by the CWU.
There are 108 members of the local CWU unit from the various area churches. It is hoped that other churches will become members and participate in the local CWU program.
World Community Day will be celebrated at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson at 9 a.m. on Friday. The Dec. 3 meeting will be held at St. Vincent's Catholic Church and the unit will be celebrating Jesus' birthday by bringing items to be given to the Women's Safe House.
The nominating committee will be working on looking for new officers for 2005 and they will be installed at the Hospitality Day meeting on Jan. 23 at Gordonville United Methodist Church.
Helen Lohmeier's daughter, Melinda, designed and made a portion of the Ribbon of Tangible Hope that many CWU units are making to be pieced together and taken to the United Nations in New York City. The local ribbon was taken to a recent state board meeting to be used with the others received.
Dolly Jewell volunteered to serve on the State Assembly 2006 that the unit is in charge of. There was discussion about the place the meeting could be held, hopefully closer to our area so more women could attend. This suggestion will be taken to the next state board meeting.
It was reported that the new national CWU president is Gail Mengal of Independence, Mo.
The next Bible study and board meeting will be on Jan 7 at First Christian Church in Cape Girar-deau.
Alpha Delta Kappa
Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary sorority for women educators, held its joint Founder's Day meeting on Oct. 18 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. The group raised $135 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer foundation, one of the international altruistic projects of the group.
Oak Ridge After-School 4-H
The Oak Ridge After-School 4-H Club met Oct. 27 in the Oak Ridge Elementary School library. There were 23 members, two leaders and one guest present.
Dakota Oehl presided over the meeting. Jordyn Aden led the songs and Lane Lukefahr and Madison LeGrand lead the pledges.
McKenzie Elam gave a project report on light bulb art, and Aden gave a report on woodworking.
Future plans include community service space projects.
Nancy Hunter NSDAR
The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met Oct. 26 at the Interpretive Center for a tour of the reproduction of the Louis Lorimier Home and Trading Post. They proceeded on to the Cape Girardeau Public Library for the business meeting.
The minutes were read and approved. Karen Lang gave the treasury report.
Mary Jane Sullivan and Billie Kay Hamlin, daughters of deceased member Geneva Davie Wiggs, were guests at their mother's memorial the group held.
Virginia Giles Lakemeyer, daughter of Margaret Giles, and Juanita Allen, daughter of Ernestine Wright, both wrote thank-you notes, telling how much they appreciated the care and thoughtfulness shown by the group.
A Christmas party will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8 for the five ladies the group is sponsoring at the Missouri Veterans Home.
The next meeting will be held on Dec. 1 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library with Rodger Brown speaking on Operation Troops Support.
American Legion Post 158
The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 met Oct. 12 with commander Gary Kamp presiding. The chaplain offered a prayer and members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the preamble to the constitution of the American Legion.
Dr. Ron Anderson, superintendent of Jackson School District, was introduced and gave the program on the proposed new high school and the upcoming election on the bond issue to support its construction.
The minutes of last month's meeting were approved as written.
Richard Aguilar gave the financial report. P.M. Kurre reported membership at 602 with 385 members paid up for 2005.
Harlan Siebert reported the executive committee discussed ideas for upgrading the hall. Kamp asked members to submit any ideas they have for the hall to him and he will compile a list for consideration. He complimented Lou Crites and Leonard Adams on the condition of the hall floor.
Jack Latimer gave the club room report. Bill Poe reported that Lawson Burgfeld donated hospital equipment to the post.
Bob Hartle reported on the honor guard participation at the MIA/POW event at Brookside and raising the flag at Procter & Gamble.
Jim Nelson reported contributions were made to the American Legion Post 158 Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of Vesta Bollinger, made by Joe and Helen Gohn, Gary and Jane Miller, S.T. and Mary Lou Eakins, Jim and Evelyn Nelson, Ralph Fehr, Winnie and Ralph Dumey, Delores Meyer, Alvin and Rada Lou Kamp, Bob and Vera Jean Voges, Harvey and Wanda Hardy, Mike and Estelle Woods, and David and Cindy Tatum.
Keith Seabaugh reported on a visit to the Missouri Veterans Home and reminded members of the district meeting scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the post. Vince Schwartz is not able to cook the meal for this meeting and had contacted Kenny Koehler to take care of the task. Funds of $300 will be made available to cover the cost of the meal.
David Ludwig reported on Americanism. He said the first meeting of the Veterans Day parade was held. The parade will start at 5 p.m. on Nov. 11, and the program will be held at New McKendree United Methodist Church following the parade. Line-up for the parade will be at 4:30 p.m. at Jackson Frozen Food Locker.
Virgil Whitener gave the house report. He announced he will be leaving the job of house chairman and the post will start using the people that work in the club room to handle these functions.
Adams reported on dances. He made a motion that up to four people who work the dances be paid for this. Discussion followed and motion was seconded but did not pass.
Bill Sullivan reported on the successful operation of the hamburger stand at Homecomers.
Motion was made for the second vote to provide $1,500 for the Veterans at Home Christmas presents. The motion was seconded and passed.
Kamp encouraged attendance at the district meeting at 2 p.m. and the 8:30 a.m. service at First General Baptist Church on Sunday.
