The sale of Air Illinois to Air Midwest, a Wichita, Kan.-based regional carrier, won't delay the resumption of the airline's Cape Girardeau service, tentatively scheduled to begin March 6, said an Air Illinois spokesman.

A new agreement between the city and the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri over financing animal shelter services is expected to be considered by the Cape Girardeau City Council next week; under the new plan, the city would pay $17 for each animal turned over to the society.

50 years ago: Jan. 27, 1959

E. Lawrence Bahn Jr., assistant professor of chemistry at State College, was winner of the Distinguished Service Award presented last night by the Cape Girardeau Jaycees.

Light snow and sleet on highways and streets early this morning slow traffic greatly and result in accidents before sunshine clears off the wintry coating; north of here, highways are even more dangerous.

75 years ago: Jan. 27, 1934

Preliminary plans for the railroad bridge over Merriwether Street, north of the Fountain Street intersection, have been received by the Cape Girardeau city engineer from the Missouri Pacific Railroad; the plans call for a structure more than 100 feet long.

An electric light and power schedule, providing for an average reduction of 10 percent to Cape Girardeau and 26 other area towns, is filed by the Missouri Utilities Co., with the Public Service Commission; the schedule is similar to one proposed several days ago, if the city would agree to drop all litigation against the company; this rate reduction, however, is without any "strings attached."

100 years ago: Jan. 27, 1909

Last night's Elmer S. Batterson meeting was another great success, and Cape Girardeau's interest in what the town booster has to say continues to increase; Batterson spoke on merchandising, paying special attention to mail order business.

This is the last day of the nine-day agriculture short course for farmers at the Normal School; the final guest lecturer was Curtis Hill, state highway engineer, who discussed road building.
