A car wreck during rush hour Monday in Cape Girardeau left one child dead and three other people injured, said Sgt. Jason Selzer, spokesman for the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

The accident took place when a minivan traveling westbound on Highway 74 near the Shawnee Sports Complex entrance struck a parked vehicle, Selzer said.

All four occupants of the minivan were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, Selzer said.

One, a 7-year-old child, was rushed to an area hospital, but died an hour later at the hospital from the injuries sustained, said Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton.

The child was from the area, but the name has been withheld pending notification of all family members, Clifton said.

There were several people in the other vehicle, but it is unknown whether there were three or four, and none was transported by ambulance to hospitals, Selzer said.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
