A formula to distribute student loan funds assigned State College under the National Defense Education Act is being determined by a faculty committee; the college will receive $14,032 instead of the $3,811 announced Tuesday by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
Mr. and Mrs. John Milford announce plans to open the Milford Appliance Co., 626 Good Hope St., this week; for the past 12 years, he was associated with a Maytag store in Cairo, Ill.
75 years ago: Feb. 5, 1934
The U.S. Supreme Court rules that people charged with violating the national Prohibition law before its repeal cannot be tried for such offenses in federal court; 30 defendants in Cape Girardeau will be liberated by today's ruling.
Table tennis, the game of swatting a bouncing ball with a paddle that has created wide interest in Cape Girardeau, will be featured tonight during the intermission between halves of the State College-DePaul University basketball game at Houck Field House.
100 years ago: Feb. 5, 1909
There's a lot of activity going on in the south part of Cape Girardeau; Max J. Koeck, manager of the Cape Brewery, has a large group of mechanics remodeling the ice plant, and by the time hot weather sets in, the brewery will be equipped with a 50-ton ice plant instead of the 20-ton plant it now houses; in addition to the ice department, the brewery is also being renewed, with new boilers, engines and other equipment.
Progress continues on construction of the new federal courthouse in Cape Girardeau; the first car load of iron arrives from Birmingham, and some of it is hauled to the site in the afternoon.
