The Macy's store at West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau is among the locations nationwide that will be affected by the company's announcement it is cutting 7,000 jobs, or 4 percent of its work force.

Macy's spokeswoman Sharon Bateman said an average of five to six positions will be eliminated at each of its 840 stores.

Earlier this year the Cincinnati-based company announced it was closing 11 stores, including the Crestwood Mall location in St. Louis. Bateman said no further store closures are expected this year.

"We are hoping this positions us to manage during the economic downturn and when it turns around," Bateman said.
