October was Neighborhood Nights Month in Cape Girardeau -- a time for neighbors to foster caring and concern for each other and promote a stronger and more effective community.

Organized by the Vision 2020 City Advisory Board, chairman Nancy Jernigan said, "These gatherings gave neighbors a chance to celebrate the things we all share and discover the diversity among us that makes America great. The get-togethers provided a chance to rekindle friendships, welcome new neighbors, and learn about each others' families, interests and needs."

Schnucks donated gift certificates to the first 20 groups to register their block parties. Registration entitled parties to choose a visit by either the police or fire department.

"We were very pleased with the success of this first-ever event," Jernigan said.
