  • Jackson youth league: The Jackson Boys Baseball League will conduct summer registration for the 2009 season on three dates in the Community Room at Jackson City Hall. Registration times will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 28, 1 to 4 p.m. March 1 and 6 to 8 p.m. March 5. Registration forms also can be found on the league's website www.jblbaseball.org and mailed with payment to Jackson Boys League, P.O. Box 676, Jackson, MO 63755. Registrations after March 21 will not be accepted. Forms received after March 5 must be accompanied by a $15 late fee.

Basketball

  • Travel team tryouts: Next Level Global Sports Basketball Club, coached by B.J. Smith, will hold tryouts for boys and girls in high school March 14 and 21 at Red Star Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau. Girls will try out at 4 p.m., while boys will try out at 6 p.m. Info: 587-4646 or 382-9343.
  • Hot shot contest: The Scott City Park Department will host its sixth annual hot shot contest for boys and girls Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Assembly of God gymnasium. The event is free and open to boys and girls in grades 8 and under. Registration begins at noon and shooting begins at 1 p.m. Info: Park office, 264-2322.
  • Men's alumni tournament: The Scott City Park Board will host its 24th annual men's alumni basketball tournament at Scott City High School on March 13 and 14. Team captains can pick up rosters at City Hall or the park office by March 3. Cost: $100 per team. Info: Park office, 264-2322.

Running

  • Super Kids Race Day: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will host the Super Kids Race Day today at the Southeast Missouri State University Recreation Center at 12:45 p.m. It is open to children from crawlers to 15 years old. There will be an open 1-mile race for all ages, including adults. Children 2 and under will race together, while children 3 and older will run separately. Cost: $14, with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. and lasting until 12:30 p.m. Info or to register: Heather at the Parks and Recreation Department, 339-6340.
  • Mardi Gras 5K: The Notre Dame FCCLA will host a Mardi Gras 5-kilometer walk/run Saturday at the St. Vincent DePaul Center, with proceeds going to breast cancer research in memory of Jean Hermsdorfer. Registration will be from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m., with the race starting at 8 a.m. There also will be a 1-mile fun run for children 12 and younger. Cost: $12 by Wednesday; $15 after. Softball

  • Parks and Recreation leagues: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will hold managers meetings for the 2009 season at the Osage Community Centre. The meeting for co-ed, church and men's leagues will be March 12. The meeting for girls fast-pitch will be April 9. All meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. The registration deadline for the co-ed league is March 20. The deadline for the men's and church leagues is March 27.
