Exchange Club
The Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau met Oct. 5 and 19 at Port Cape.
The Oct. 5 meeting was called to order by Monty Kyle, president. Cliff Irwin presented the program.
The Oct. 19 meeting was called to order by Kyle. Guest speaker was Donna Taake, 4-H Youth Specialist with the University of Missouri Extension. She reported that youths ages five to 18 can be a 4-H member.
Kyle read an article from the Exchange Club magazine, stating that dues will be increased by $3.50 per quarter.
Larry Simon has a schedule for bell ringers at K-Mart starting Nov. 29 through Dec. 3 and Dec. 6 through Dec. 10. There will be two work shifts per evening, from 5 to 7 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
The next meeting will be held Nov. 16 with Kyle presenting the program.
Town & Country FCE
The Town & Country FCE Club met Thursday at the home of Sue Jones. The meeting was opened with a dinner.
The devotion titled "Autumn's grand finale," was read by Jones. Ten members and a guest were present.
The club will put the Christmas display up in Cape County Park on Nov. 20.
It was voted to give $10 to the Salvation Army for the Thanksgiving meal and $25 for the Tree of Lights. It was also decided to take bingo prizes to the Lutheran Home in December.
Mary Klaproth read a letter she received from a soldier in Iraq in response to Military Mail Christmas Cards.
Seven members plan to go on the FCE-sponsored trip to Branson, Mo., this Friday through Sunday.
The Christmas party will be held at Illmo Bakery and Cafe at which time Darlene McCain will install the new officers for 2005. Members will bring toys for Toybox at that time.
Two mini programs were given by McAnally titled "Little things make a difference" and "Drug assistance programs."
Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 at O'Charley's in Cape Girardeau.
Alpha Mu Master
Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Carole Calvin.
Prior to the meeting, Vicki McKinney introduced her daughter, Heather Connell, and Katie Wilson, who gave a presentation of upcoming events of the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Theatre and Dance 2004-2005 season, including "Transitions," the 2004 Repertory Dance Concert to be held Nov. 18 through 20 at Rose Theatre.
The meeting was conducted by Linda Metheny. Plans were made to attend the Exemplar-Preceptor Banquet to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 at the Elks Lodge in Cape Girardeau.
Calvin, assisted by Bernie Gardner, Bobbie Woodard, Judie Herbst and Metheny, presented the program for the evening. They reported on the Beta Sigma Phi Missouri State Convention held in St. Louis Oct. 22 through 24. The convention was held at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac. The 2005 convention will be held in Cape Girardeau.
The next meeting will be at the home of Woodard.
Young American 4-H Club
The Young American 4-H Club met Oct. 21 at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. The meeting was called to order by Leslie Birk, president, with 19 members and 16 leaders present. Gary Schweer and Julia Weber led the pledges. Songs were led by Julia Weber and those with October birthdays were recognized.
The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved. Micayla Gray read a thank-you note from the Ostendorf and Iller families.
Tori Schweer gave a report on the bake sale at Sunny Hill Gardens. Eight families donated baked goods for the sale. Weber gave a report on the clowning activities at the bake sale. A Halloween party was held on Oct. 29 at the home of Diane Schweer. Donna Telle gave a report that there were a lot of items placed on display in the window at Garber's in Cape Girardeau and that the items could be picked up after the meeting.
Dortha Strack gave a report on the quilt and asked the members to be sure and sell their raffle tickets.
Volunteers for the Thanksgiving dinner committee were the Kirchdoerfer, Illers and Kinsey families. The dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 18. The committee will furnish the meat and drinks and each family should bring a dish.
Mary Gray reported the donation to Grace United Methodist Church for using the church would be mailed that week. A report was given on officer's training. There were three officers and a leader from the club present.
The club was reminded that the Recognition Banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Extension Office in Jackson. Blake Telle gave a report on his trip to Columbia, Mo., for the State Fashion Review and Donna Telle gave a report on dues and enrollment.
It was announced that the next meeting would be the Thanksgiving dinner and dues should be paid.
Strack announced that Valentines for soldiers in Iraq should be brought to the November meeting. She also distributed money won for exhibits at SEMO District Fair. Eighteen members exhibited winning a total of 87 ribbons.
Schweer gave a demonstration on "hot cocoa mix for a crowd" and Leslie Birk gave an illustrated talk on "conformation of a horse."
Retired Teacher Association
The Retired Teacher Association of Missouri, Cape Girardeau Unit, met Nov. 3 at Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau.
The program was a World War II experience and commemoration presented by William Donald Yount. He brought a display of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. He gave a program on the dedication of the memorial. He also included facts about the Declaration of Independence and the tomb of the unknown soldier.
A business meeting followed.
The next meeting will be on Dec. 1 at Chateau Girardeau with the meeting starting at 9:30 a.m. and a luncheon to begin at 11 a.m. The program will be "The men of Westminster singers." Reservations are necessary for the lunch. Contact Gene Loftis at 334-5390. This will be the last meeting of the year. The first meeting of 2005 will be March 2.
