Reasonably good weather has permitted workers to proceed with construction of the new Cape Girardeau fire headquarters at Independence and Sprigg streets; bricklayers are busy at the site, taking advantage of warmer than average weather.

Only two days remain to pay city and county tax bills before the bills become delinquent and subject to penalty charges; collection offices in Jackson and Cape Girardeau will be open Saturday for the convenience of those who still owe taxes.

50 years ago: Dec. 28, 1954

Creeks are filling their banks, and in many cases overflowing bottom land, following three days of rain that have brought the total of December to one of the highest marks on record; precipitation in the 24-hour period ending at 8 a.m. is 1.9 inches; total for the month is 6.48 inches.

Mayor Narvol A. Randol says city council is considering possibility of a special ballot on Jan. 25 to determine community sentiment on asking federal government to return Common Pleas Courthouse and Park to the city's ownership.

75 years ago: Dec. 28, 1929

Eastern freight rates to Cape Girardeau over the Missouri Pacific Lines will become effective Jan. 9; these rates will place the Mo-Pac on a parity with the Frisco on rates from St. Louis, Chicago, Thebes, Ill., Cairo, Ill., and other points by giving the road a similar schedule.

A meeting of Cape Girardeau County residents will be held Jan. 14 to determine support for the county fair next year; the fair's board of directors is willing to go ahead with the fair, if it is given tangible support from Cape Girardeau.

100 years ago: Dec. 28, 1904

Louis Krueger, the hardware man, gets a Christmas present; his brother-in-law, A. Lindoerfer, who lives in Jewell, Okla., went hunting Christmas day and killed two catamounts, known to sportsmen as "bobcats"; one of the animals is mounted and sent it to Krueger, who places it on display in his store window.

Emma Huebel of St. Louis arrived in Cape Girardeau yesterday at noon for a visit with her parents.
