No swine flu cases in Missouri

Cape Girardeau County's infectious disease task force reviewed the latest state and federal swine flu bulletins this morning, according to Jane Wernsman, R.N., the assistant director of Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center.

The task force includes county emergency response officials and medical professionals.

Wernsman said the state is about to release guidelines for responding to to any reports of the swine flu, though no cases have been reported yet in Missouri.

"The message we want to get out is that we are aware of what is going on," Wernsman said. She said the county's infectious disease task force "has been working on this for the last three years. We're taking more of a preventative approach -- keep yourself in good health generally."

She said the quickest way to prevent transmission of the flu or other diseases is by frequent handwashing and avoiding touching the eyes and mouth. She said people who sneeze should use their elbows to cover their mouths or a tissue, but in either case, wash hands after. She said tissues should be properly discarded.

"Anytime someone thinks they need medical testing, they should consult with their medical professional," she said.

The health center will release a formal statement later today.

Wernsman said Cape Girardeau County residents who have more questions could call 335-7846 or visit www.cgcohealthdept.com. For details on the swine flu, visit www.cdc.gov.
