Dangerous driving

SINCE Missouri lawmakers are only concerned with stopping texting while driving while allowing talking on the phone while driving, I think you should only be arrested for DWI if you have been drinking hard liquor while allowing you to continue if you drink beer. Texting and talking on the phone and drinking beer or any alcohol influence your driving ability. Why not make all of it illegal?

Homeless by choice

WHEN I was younger, I had no car and no phone. I had to walk to a store to call a cab at 4 a.m. and wait for it, rain or shine. I was a hostess at a restaurant and wore a dress. I made $500 a month. I paid rent and utilities with my first paycheck and had about $40 left for two weeks. I had a roommate, and we both pitched in $20 for groceries to last for two weeks. Tuna and mac and cheese go far. We were creative for entertainment and borrowed each other's clothes to stretch our wardrobe. We bought coats at consignment shops. Our furniture was from a yard sale. I was considered poverty level. My point? If you are willing to work, you can make ends meet. Sure, you will have less than others. So? You will feel good about yourself when you put in a day's work, even if the wages aren't great. Recently, my family tried to help a man that was trying to get back on his feet, got him an apartment with low rent and got him a job as a cook. He took all the electronics we gave him, cashed them in and fled town. He never showed up for the job. How he would have been at the homeless shelter? A permanent resident.

Bus stops

THE reason there are so many school bus stops in Jackson and most school districts is because parents would protest against their children walking too much. Parents baby children more these days. If walking were a sport or after-school activity, having fewer stops would work.

Not murderers

CHRISTIANS must never be for murder. Even if we disagree with a late-term abortion doctor, we never take the law into our own hands by murdering anyone. He was murdered while ushering in church. Please pray for the family and the soul of this doctor. We want him and all people to be greeted as followers of Jesus Christ.

Soul-searching

HIS motives aside, it has been a long time since anyone has yanked Cape Girardeau's chain to the degree the Rev. Larry Rice has. He has forced us to engage in a communitywide introspection concerning what we are and what we stand for. That is very much a community plus, and we owe Rice a warm, collective, Cape Girardeau "Thank you."

Metamorphosis?

OCCASIONALLY, David Limbaugh forgets that much of his readership consists of literalists. These folks do not understand sarcasm, tongue-in-cheek comments or hyperbole. Thus, when Mr. Limbaugh writes, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little conservative minds," most readers will think Limbaugh has rejected his own political philosophy, abandoned conservatism, lurched to the left, become a moral relativist, embraced liberalism and abandoned the sinking conservative ship. However, on the bright side, maybe Limbaugh is well aware that the readership takes everything he writes literally and has indeed seen the light. If so, I want to be among the first to publicly forgive Limbaugh for his long period of political transgressions and extend a hand of welcome inside the pride-filled tent of political progressivism.
