Glenn Reeves is on target with his May 29 letter complaining about the wasteful enormity of our public debt. Then he says, "The United States has survived the Great Depression and several tough recessions." The sad news is that we may not fully recover from the current recession unless and until something positive is done about the debt.

That brings us to my current commitment. We must have a constitutional amendment to require a balanced federal budget. Our Founders should have done it. They didn't. We came close in the 1990s, but we didn't. Now is the time to do it, but I need help.
