JOPLIN, Mo. -- Environmental specialists and geologists suspect that a collapsed mine shaft caused a sinkhole to open up in the back yard of a Joplin home.
The Joplin Globe reported on its website that officials from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources visited Carrol Allgood's property Friday to investigate the sinkhole that had formed under an aboveground pool.

The hole measured nearly 10 feet across and 4 feet deep.
Confirmation of the cause of the collapse will require more tests.
