STEELE, Mo. -- An investigation lasting more than a year culminated Monday as the Humane Society of Missouri and Caruthersville, Mo., conducted a search at a Pemiscot County residence, resulting in the removal of 51 animals.

According to local officials, Humane Society investigators from Caruthersville and the Humane Society of Missouri, Pemiscot County sheriff's deputies, area animal control officers and assisting departments were on hand as the warrant was executed at the residence on County Road 437, just north of Steele, where animals were believed to be in danger.

Once the warrant was served, officials said, animal remains were found in various stages of decomposition, as well as animals that had been neglected or abused.

Animals removed from the home included 23 dogs, six cats, six horses, and 16 goats and sheep. The animals were taken by the Humane Society of Missouri to its St. Louis location for medical care.

Investigators said some of the animals suffered from sores, fly bites and broken horns and hooves. Officials said their arrival was too late for one puppy, which died on the scene during the seizure.

The case is still under investigation, and the owner of the property, who has not been named, signed a voluntary transfer regarding the animals.

A disposition hearing has been tentatively scheduled for June 29 before Judge Byron Luber of the Pemiscot County Circuit Court. The prosecuting attorney has yet to file formal charges in the case.
