Doc Cain, the owner of Port Cape Girardeau restaurant, is planning to open another restaurant next month, but it will be much different from Port Cape. His son, James, will serve as the head chef of the restaurant, called Cain, which will feature contemporary American cuisine.

Andrew Cain told me the menu will change weekly based on the fresh produce and quality of meats and seafood that are available at the market. No food from Port Cape will be served at the restaurant, which will be at 31 N. Main St. It will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The restaurant will have seating for 50 people and no sitting bar, though it will serve select cocktails, wines and specialty beers.

For the past few months crews have been restoring the former Lewis and Clark restaurant, adding a new kitchen, equipment and dining room.

Andrew Cain has spent the past five years studying at the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago and honing his skills as a chef at a country club in the Windy City. He and his wife, Olivia, have three daughters. Trained in classical French cuisine, Cain wanted to bring that style of food back to his hometown.

"I want to offer all the great things and knowledge I learned while in Chicago, which has excellent food, back here to my hometown," he said. "I think this will be a wonderful service to the community."

* Illinois dealership purchases Cape Hyundai: According to a business license filed in the Cape Girardeau city hall, Ward Chrysler Center in DuQuoin, Ill., has purchased Cape Hyundai, 386 Siemers Drive. The takeover is expected to be official this week, when the dealership will become Ward Hyundai. There has been no word on the reason for the takeover. Ward Chrysler Center's website said it sells Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles. Watch for more details on this.

* Mollie's granted temporary license: Mollie's Cafe and Bar has been granted a temporary 30-day extension of its city liquor license. All city liquor licenses expire June 30 and generally are good for one year. Mollie's license is a temporary one because the bar's owner, Merriwether Investments, owes a city tax bill that must be paid before a full license will be granted, interim city manager Ken Eftink said. "Every now and then we have a business that is right down to the wire and needs something taken care of," Eftink said.

The extension, he said, means the council will not have to hold an emergency session before June 30 to keep the restaurant open. "That would be the option, to not grant the 30-day conditional license and come back for an emergency session or have the business shut down," Eftink said.

* Crain Funeral Homes purchases long-time Cape Girardeau funeral home: Crain Funeral Homes in Anna, Ill., will take ownership of Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel in Cape Girardeau on July 1. Owner Bryan Crain said all policies with Lorberg will be honored.

Crain said many of the families who are long-time customers of his 77-year-old business have now relocated to Cape Girardeau.

"There's a lot of history there with a lot of people we feel close to," Crain said. "So it just made sense to continue to be a part of everything."

* Resale clothing store opens: 1031 Broadway will house a new clothing store by mid-July. Thrifty Resale Clothing will carry men's and women's clothing, though owner Rose Turrietta said the store is intended to appeal largely to the university crowd.

Formerly of Las Vegas, Turrietta said she is opening the store in Cape Girardeau because she loves the community.

"I love the people and shopping here, so I thought it would be a great combination and relationship between us," Turrietta said. "When I moved to this area two-and-a-half years ago I became absolutely enamored with the people here. I haven't met a person I don't like here."

The store will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The phone number is 238-1441.

* Enough wind power for 26,000 households: AmerenUE has signed an agreement with Horizon Wind Energy's Pioneer Prairie Wind Farm in Iowa to purchase 102 megawatts of power. Company officials say that's enough to provide power for 26,000 households, fulfilling AmerenUE's plan to add 100 megawatts of renewable capacity by 2010.

"This is only one of many initiatives we have established to increase renewable resources and improve the environment," said AmerenUE president and chief executive officer Warner L. Baxter in a news release.

* Ribbon cuttings planned: The Jackson Chamber of Commerce has scheduled three ribbon cuttings this week.

MediCenter Pharmacy, 200 W. Washington St., will have a ribbon cutting at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Missouri Upper Cervical Family Clinic will hold its ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday at 1404 Old Cape Road Suite 205.
