Petty omission

FOX TV is certainly free to take a knee-jerk anti-Obama stance if it chooses. However, the failure of Fox to carry President Obama's Father's Day message was disgraceful, a message all fathers need to hear, even those who are Fox TV disciples. The decision not to carry the president's address by the network was petty to a fault and exposed Fox TV as a channel run by small minded cynics.

Hot dogs

IT'S hot, and I would like to post a reminder to the people who think its OK to leave your dog in a sweltering car on a 90-degree day on a parking lot. I was shopping the other day and heard dogs barking wildly in cars that had been parked on store parking lot. I wish people who leave dogs in hot cars would sit in their cars and see if they can stand it for 15 minutes. What will wake people up? Even if the dog seems OK, it could suffer brain damage at such temps and is certainly suffering. On days over 70 degrees, please leave the dog home so you can enjoy shopping leisurely and your pet will be happy and healthy.

University info

THERE is data available that tells how one college or university is doing in comparison to another. Alumni giving, wealth, ACT or SAT scores of students and school reputation tell us nothing about how well a college or university is doing when it comes to actual student achievement. The trouble is organizations like Collegiate Learning Assessment can't report their findings publicly. As noted in The Atlantic Monthly, this needs to change. The Obama administration's stimulus package gives it leverage over colleges and universities to see to it that such information is released to the public so that real comparisons can be made. Southeast Missouri State University could get the ball rolling.

Wastewater problem

WHY did the city wait two years to make the public aware of the problem with the wastewater treatment plant? They have known about this since 2007. Now all of a sudden it is an emergency. Maybe the water park would not be in the picture if residents knew about this problem.

Need for reform?

REGARDLESS of the flood of statistics foisted upon us by Gary Rust to convince us otherwise, a significant majority of Americans favor fixing America's broken health care system. It is not the goal of President Obama to nationalize the U.S. health care system, so any argument to that effect is a canard. Even Republican public officials admit that health care needs reforming, though, of course, they have no plan. Is it Mr. Rust's position that there need be no health care reform at all?

Abortion hero

SOME abortion proponents seem ready to elevate late-term abortionist George Tiller to sainthood as if he was some sort of Mother Teresa-type character. This was a man who made millions performing as many as 60 thousand abortions in his infamous career. Many of these were the most controversial late-term abortions where a child about to be born is killed instead. Are John Wayne Gacy and Jeffrey Dahmer also heroes of the left?
