Cape Girardeau City Council members say they are "shocked and disappointed" over the decision yesterday by the Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents to abandon plans for a joint city/university multipurpose building.

Two ponds will be constructed on Southeast Missouri State University's Springdale Farm property; the work, approved by the board of regents yesterday, will be done by the Missouri National Guard as a training exercise.

50 years ago: July 27, 1959

A small tornado swirled through the northern tip of Cape Girardeau County yesterday afternoon; the twister wrecked a few buildings and injured two people living in a house trailer near Frohna, Mo.

A plan for the paving of Bertling Street is outlined during a meeting of the Cape Girardeau City Council; the street will be improved with concrete from Sprigg Street to the top of the hill to the west at Bel Air Drive.

75 years ago: July 27, 1934

Lower temperatures at last prevail throughout the Cape Girardeau district, thanks to scattered rain; showers were reported yesterday in Scott and Bollinger counties; as yet, Cape Girardeau benefits only from a slump in the heat, and no rain, other than light sprinkles, has fallen.

Manager Bill Sullivan's Capahas will do diamond battle in their own back yard Sunday, after two consecutive games away, when the Metropolis, Ill., nine calls at the new park; Cloyd "Dixie" Walker will make his debut in Cape Girardeau in the Caps' livery, after turning in two creditable performances on the road.

100 years ago: July 27, 1909

The steamer Cape Girardeau brings back two prominent Cape Girardeau County families who have been spending two weeks in the far North; they are those of G.C. Siemers and W.O. Medley, who took their wives and children to Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn., by river to enjoy the cool breezes and see the beautiful scenery.

Jaspar Grammer of Jackson, who has been clerking at the Idan-ha Hotel in Cape Girardeau for several weeks, leaves for Poplar Bluff, Mo., where he is to take a position in a restaurant.
