For months, residents of Cape Girardeau and Jackson wondered who would be next. It became a familiar story: Homeowners would leave their houses to run errands or grab a bite to eat, and when they returned they would find a door smashed in and cash and jewelry missing.

It didn't take police in both cities long to determine that more than 100 burglaries were committed by the same person or people. Each incident lasted only a few minutes. Neighbors didn't see or hear anything. There weren't many clues.

Finally, police made an arrest. While there was evidence linking the suspect to just two of the burglaries, the man told the police he was responsible for all of the burglaries. In exchange for information clearing up the break-ins, the man is being prosecuting on only two charges. The suspect faces up to 70 years in prison. Victims have been sent victim impact statement forms that could have an effect on the sentencing.

While everyone needs to be vigilant about home security, it's good to know this burglar is out of commission and being prosecuted.

Meanwhile, detectives from both police departments are investigating how the suspect exchanged stolen items for cash.
