Southeast Missouri State's Miles Smith broke two individual school records and was part of another at the Iowa State Invitational track and field meet in Ames, Iowa, on Friday and Saturday.

Smith, a sophomore, finished fourth in the 200 at 21.42 seconds, nearly two tenths faster than the previous Southeast record. He also finished third in the 400 with a time of 46.61, breaking a 10-year-old record held by Terrance Branch.

"He really had an impressive day," Southeast coach Joey Haines said of Smith.

Smith also anchored the 1600 relay team, which included Walter Washington, Alonzo Nelson and Chaz Brown. The squad finished seventh with a school-record time of 3:09.68.

Miles' 400 time, as well as the 1600 relay time, met NCAA provisional qualifying standards.

On the women's side, Brooke Woodruff ran the 800 in 2:08.71, placing seventh and also meeting the NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Kathy Coleman was eighth in the long jump at 19 feet, 4 inches.

Haines was especially impressed with his team's performance considering the competition, which consisted of nearly 70 teams, including all of the Big 10 and half of the Big 12, and over 2,000 athletes.

"It was by far the best track meet in the U.S. this weekend," Haines said. "It was a tremendous meet, and probably the best since we've been in Division 1.

"It was really competitive, and we had a lot of good performances. Hopefully both the men and women can carry this over and make a run at the OVC title in a couple weeks."
