The dark side of the Internet was apparent in August when a Facebook social networking page became a tool for scammers. As a result, two friends who thought they were providing financial assistance to a Cape Girardeau woman lost $4,300.

A hacker used information from the Facebook page and assumed, with a bit of electronic manipulation, the woman's identity. The scammer also was able to block the woman's attempts to access her own page and post a warning about the scam.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department says everyone who posts information on the Internet should be cautious and take steps to protect that information. Among the tips to avoid scammers: Use a different password for every online account. Change the passwords regularly. Avoid posting information such as addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and Social Security numbers.

And if you fall prey to a scammer, call the police immediately and file a report.

Unfortunately, it's easier for scammers to do their dirty work than it is for Internet users to safeguard their identities and personal information.

Be warned: If you get an Internet plea for money or for confidential information such as bank account numbers, be sure to verify the request before taking any action.
