The Notre Dame girls cross country team pulled out an unexpected win Saturday in a meet hosted by Central.

Notre Dame took first among the six scoring teams with 48 points. Carbondale was second with 51 points while Central was third with 60.

The Bulldogs' top runner was sophomore Elizabeth Kiblinger, who placed 12th in 22 minutes, 5 seconds. There was only a one-minute gap between the Bulldogs' top five runners.

"It was a pleasant shock," Notre Dame coach Bill Davis said. "They're just running a lot better than they have in the past. The girls are running in a pack, a pack near the front and not the back."

Chaffee's Luisa Boschan finished first overall in 20:08 and Jackson's Taylor Dickerson finished 3 seconds behind in second. Central's Mary Dohogne placed third in 20:33.

Central took second place in the boys race with 72 points, three points behind Farmington.

The Tigers' top runner was Roy Leighton, who placed ninth in 17:27.

Notre Dame, led by another first-place finish by senior Wynn McClellan, placed third with 76 points.

McClellan covered the 3.1-mile layout in a driving rain in 16:37.

"He just knows how to win," Davis said. "His time probably wasn't what it could have been under drier conditions, but anyone in the race can say that."

Scott City's Brandon Shemonia placed second in 16:45.
