In almost a decade at the helm, Delta softball coach Laura Brown had never beaten the Kelly Hawks.

Kendra Burnett helped Brown change that. The senior pitcher shut out the Hawks last week, leading her team to a 1-0 victory at home.

Burnett walked two batters in the opening inning but allowed just two hits and one walk the rest of the way while striking out nine batters.

"It seemed like she wasn't focused in that first inning," Brown said of Burnett after the game. "After that, she really found her spot. I think every pitcher gets aggravated when they don't get every call they think they should have. But we talk about this all the time, get past it, get over it, keep pitching."

Burnett kept pitching and picked up three more victories over the next week. She recorded 12 strikeouts in a win over Kennett and picked up victories over St. Vincent and Crystal City at the Perryville Tournament, helping the Bobcats to a third-place finish.
