ARLINGTON, Va. -- Federal mine safety officials are awarding training grants to Missouri and Kansas.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration said Monday it will provide more than $8.3 million in health and safety training grants this year.

Missouri will receive almost $204,000 while Kansas will receive almost $82,000.

The states will use the money for federally required safety training for both surface and underground miners. State mine inspectors, labor departments and universities will provide the training.

Besides Missouri and Kansas, the Labor Department is providing the grants to 45 other states and the Navajo Nation.
