The state is partnering with Microsoft to distribute vouchers for adult online learning programs.

Missouri is one of the initial states to participate in Microsoft Elevate America, which started in February. The program aims to train more than 2 million people throughout the country during the next three years.

The program provides access to online classes for programs like Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel. In Missouri, 24,750 vouchers will be available for the tutorials. There are vouchers available for business and information technology professional training.

The program was launched in Missouri on Nov. 2. Four weeks later more than 10,000 people had applied to receive the vouchers.

Eight other states are offering the program including Iowa, Mississippi and North Carolina. Illinois distributed its vouchers between July 31 and Oct. 31.

The Missouri Department of Economic Development's Division of Workforce Development is administering the program. June O'Dell, president of the Workforce Investment Board of Southeast Missouri, said technology experience is a much-needed skill among adults seeking work.

"There's just tons of people we see that have no computer experience," she said. The lack of computer training is a remaining barrier for some adults, O'Dell said.

Vouchers will be offered until Jan. 31. Students have a year to complete the program, which includes certification exams. The vouchers are accessible at www.mo.gov or the division of workforce development center, 216 N. Fountain St.
