Church Women United

The annual World Day of Prayer was held by the area Church Women United on March 4 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau. Martha Sanderson and Dolly Jewell were co-chairwomen for the event.

The theme of the service was "Let Our Light Shine," written by the Christian women of Poland and was shared by women in 179 countries around the world. The first World Day of Prayer took place in Poland in 1927 and has continued since.

Trudy Lee was song leader, Beverly Reese was pianist and Deb Tracy read Scriptures. Others that participated in the service were Joyce King, Barb Swan, Helen Lohmeier, Marge Janssen, Pat Foster, Mary Curry, Geneva Allen, Ilena Aslin, Barbara Yallaly, Jewell and Sanderson.

A reception was given by the women of Westminster Presbyterian Church after the service.

The next CWU meeting will be at First Presbyterian Church in Perryville, Mo., on Friday. The group will meet at Grace United Methodist Church at 8:15 a.m. to carpool.

St. Mary CCW

The St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met on March 17 in the St. Mary School cafeteria. Dolores Pobst opened the meeting with "A prayer for our children."

Gail Timpe's Girl Scout troop presented the colors and entertained with several songs. They also gave each member a St. Patrick's Day pin that they had made.

Diane Schaefer sent 15 birthday cards and three get-well cards. One bereavement dinner was served. Shoes, shoelaces and socks can be dropped off at the parish office until Friday. Pobst reported on the Day of Reflection held at Oran, Mo.

Hazel Blank, CWU representative, announced that the Bible study and board meeting will be held Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Perryville, Mo.

Final plans for the garage/white elephant and bake sale were made. Items may be taken to the gym from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on April 8. Those renting tables may set up after 6 a.m. on April 9. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. on April 9 and will continue until 5:30 p.m. or until vendors leave. The bake sale will also be held on April 10.

Refreshments were served by the March circle.

Several members will attend the annual spring assembly to be held April 29 and 30 in Springfield, Mo.

The group will attend the parish mission instead of holding a meeting in April. The next meeting is planned for May 19.

Lions of Missouri 26D

The Lions of Missouri 26D held their annual district convention in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., on March 18 and 19. Robert McKlim of Ste. Genevieve, district governor, presided at the cabinet meeting. Elections were held, and the new district governor is Murray Dunn of Patton, Mo. Vern Griffith of Sikeston, Mo., was elected as vice district governor. Members attending from Cape Girardeau were Dr. Keith Deimund, Allen Taylor, Laurie Taylor, Dorothy Cox, Barbara Breedon, Ed Tilley and Mary L. Estes.

Special guest speaker at the Saturday evening banquet was international director, Maynard Rucks of Henderson, Minn. The district awarded Linda James of Farmington, Mo., a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.

The Lions State Convention will be held at the Frontenac Hilton in St. Louis, Mo., April 29 through May 1.

TPA Post M

The Cape Girardeau Post M of the Travelers Protection Association held its annual meeting at the Elks Lodge in Cape Girardeau on March 12. Missouri division secretary Gerald Goerger and his wife, Paula, and president John Lang and his wife, Jeanette, attended.

Nancy Poston was elected as president, and Dawn Sander was elected as vice president. Juanita Henley will continue as secretary-treasurer to complete a two-year term. Leon Dickerson was selected to represent the post on the state board of directors.

Bert Daume was recognized for 50 years of membership in the fraternal organization.

Zonta Club

The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau Area met March 1 at the University Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Cheryl Mothes facilitated a discussion to revisit the club's savings practices.

The Relay for Life was discussed as a service project.

The following slate of officers for the upcoming year were announced. They are Maria Swan Childress, president-elect; Juanita Penefield, vice president; Diana Gammon, secretary; Marsha Haskell, treasurer; Kara Clark, director of finance; and Heather Brooks, director of membership. The vote will take place at the April meeting, at which time there will be nominations from the floor. The installation will be held at the annual meeting in May.
