Two Perry County school candidates re-elected

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Two Perry County school board incumbents were re-elected to their posts Tuesday night while a third was ousted to make room for a new face. Incumbents G. Scott Cooper and Jeff Weibrecht will each retain their seats on the school board. Incumbent Terry Miederhoff was beaten by Sandy Govro for the third seat. Perry County voters were asked to pick three from a field of nine candidates. The newest board member was also the top vote-getter with 601 votes. G. Scott Cooper was next with 593, followed by Weibrecht with 573. Miederhoff got 523 votes. Before the election, Govro said she wanted to be given the opportunity to uphold and promote policies that would provide educational growth for all students in Perry County. She also said ensuring the financial stability of the district was a priority. The other candidates received the following number of votes: Nancy Voelker, 455; Donna Favier, 375; Jerry Fulton, 432; Lisa Martin, 255; and Keith Keller, 159.

Alexander County voters pass senior citizens tax

CAIRO, Ill. -- Alexander County voters approved a senior citizen tax Tuesday o help fund delivery of meals to the elderly. The vote was 422 for the tax to 292 against, county election officials said. The 2.5-cent levy will generate an estimated $7,000 to $8,000 annually to supplement funding for the not-for-profit Southern Pride Senior Programs, which operates nutrition centers and delivers meals in four Southern Illinois counties. In other elections in Alexander County, Anthony "Scott" Bomar won election as mayor, defeating incumbent Bobbie Shafer. Bomar won by a vote of 64 to 26. In the race for two two-year terms on the Thebes village board, voters elected Tina Sissom and John Kennedy from among four candidates. Sissom garnered 63 votes to 39 for Kennedy. Patty Osorio had 33 and Elise "Lisa" Hale received 26. In the race for the Cairo Board of Education, voters re-elected Carlandus Mallory, Brenda Gooden and Joe Griggs. Also elected was Danny Brown. Gooden led the way with 239 votes. Mallory had 227; Brown, 220; Griggs, 207; Berlene Jones, 199; Marlene Schultz, 118; and Mary Madison, 95.

Gordonville voters pass $600,000 water bond

Residents in the Gordonville area, more specifically in Public Water District No. 4, passed a $600,000 bond issue Tuesday to improve water infrastructure. Of the 329 people who voted, 207 of them, or 62.9 percent, voted yes. The bond issue, which is estimated to cost the average use approximately $5.21 per month, was passed to improve water storage, make improvements to a well, improve water pressure in some areas and upgrade disinfection facilities to meet expected demands of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The bond issue proposal came in the wake of a study in 2003-2004 which evaluated the water system. Construction on the system should begin in 2007.

Candidates in Delta, Oak Ridge picked for boards

It may not have been the race that grabbed the most headlines, but the Delta School Board race ended up being perhaps the most evenly matched race in the area Tuesday night. Seven candidates were running for three spots. Kenneth R. Cook got the most votes with 145. Troy Smith and Jerri Menz were also elected with 110 and 108 votes, respectively. But just 10 votes separated second place from sixth place. Willard Keys Jr. was just four votes shy, followed by James Bowers with 99 votes and Roger Seabaugh with 98. In another hotly contested Cape Girardeau County school district race, Jacqueline Ludwig, Linda Schoen and Thomas Schreiner were elected fairly easily to the Oak Ridge School Board ahead of six other candidates. Schreiner led the way with 159 votes, followed by Ludwig with 155 and Schoen with 130. The next closest was Robin Tolbert with 95.
