It was about the Constitution

David Limbaugh's column this past weekend makes it clear that, along with Congress and the president, he still doesn't get it when it comes to the Schiavo tragedy and public opinion. Earth to Limbaugh: It was about the Constitution.

Radio and television pundits, including Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, have engaged in a furious attack on the judiciary often using information refuted by experts. Never mind the opinions of many medical, legal and constitutional experts, Rush Limbaugh and Hannity have found a source that trumps them all. Who is it? Randall Terry, described as a spokesman for the Schindler family. Yes, the same Randall Terry who admits to over 40 arrests and was quoted by the Fort Wayne News Sentinel on Aug. 16, 1993, as saying, "We are called by God to conquer this country. We don't want equal time. We don't want pluralism. Theocracy means God rules. I have got a hot flash. God rules."

When Congress and the president ignored common sense by entering this dispute, they confirmed fears of James Madison that executive and legislative branches in league together could usurp the power of the court. That is why justices are appointed for life terms. Madison believed the wisdom of the American people would eventually prevail over such an attempt at abuse.

In the end, God intervened in this tragedy. Polls show he gave the American people the wisdom to trump the distorted efforts of Limbaugh, Hannity and Terry by acknowledging the foresight of Madison.
