The Salvation Army in Cape Girardeau has announced a capital fund campaign to allow the organization to relocate to more adequate facilities; both buildings occupied by the Army's Corps Community Center and Thrift Store on Broadway are old and inadequate for current service programs.

Jackson businessman Paul W. Sander, 29, has filed for a seat on the Jackson School Board.

50 years ago: Jan. 25, 1960

The building at 513 Broadway, formerly known as the Coney Island, is being remodeled to house the Electric Supply Co., now at 515 Broadway; the building, owned by W.D. Deevers, will have 76 feet added to the rear; the Remnant House, now at 439 Broadway, has bought the building at 515 Broadway.

The Cape Girardeau Jaycees present awards at their annual Bosses' Night dinner; Chester Gerecke of Gordonville is Outstanding Young Farmer; Gary Rust, Jaycees president, receives the Distinguished Service Award.

75 years ago: Jan. 25, 1935

The site of historic Fort D, Civil War landmark just north of May Greene School, is about to be sold to satisfy tax claims; in recent years the site has been the subject of considerable discussion by Girardeans who want the site be preserved for civic purposes; city Commissioner Frank Batchelor would like to see the city buy the property for a children's playground.

The interior of Suedekum and Sons Hardware Co., 620 Good Hope St., has been re- arranged; a new modern nail counter of wood with metal bins has been installed, the only one of its kind in Southeast Missouri.

100 years ago: Jan. 25, 1910

Two Frisco Railroad officials are in Cape Girardeau looking over terminals, tracks and property; in company with Mayor M.E. Leming they tour the levee in an attempt to make arrangements to raise the low places along the riverfront to prevent flooding of the Frisco tracks.

BENTON, Mo. -- Some newspaper men have been in Benton recently looking over the field, evidently intending to start a paper here; there are already two newspapers in this town.
