Any suggestions?

I'M SURE the stores that are plagued with birds in their stores would welcome your opinion on how they're supposed to keep the birds out. I worked at one of those stores for several years. We had flaps that were designed to keep the birds out. There's nothing you can do to keep the birds out.

Uncaring regents

THE SOUTHEAST Missouri State University regents have made it clear they don't give a rip about what the public thinks about what they do. They don't care that they have to drop golf or close the old swimming pool. They'll just build another one and charge the students. They don't care about students getting an education. They care about a performing arts center. They want to be Washington University right here in Cape Girardeau County. They want to have the most beautiful campus and the most elegant of everything, but they don't care about a kid's education or whether students can afford to go there anymore.

Stalling the judges

I WONDER if David Limbaugh has forgotten the Republican Congress held up 34 judicial nominations made by President Clinton. That's a far cry more than the 10 nominations of President Bush's that the Democrats are stalling. Does Limbaugh think people don't remember these things?

Mowing for safety

I'D LIKE to thank the homeowner on Ridge Road for mowing the strip of city property. My dog can get off the street, and I can step out of the line of traffic. I just wish the city would keep it mowed.

Unbecoming of Marine

REGARDING THE coward who spit in Jane Fonda's face and claimed to be a Marine: I thought being a Marine meant you're a brave person who holds his head up high. You don't spit in a woman's face. Fonda has more than apologized.

The real culprit

THE SMOKING bamboozle is merely a smoke screen to take the attention off the real killer: liquor and drunken drivers. The liquor industry has yet to be sued for killing people with its product.

Observe the law

MY FEELING about bike riders is if they're on the roadways, they should be following the law.

Inconsiderate walkers

THE THREE women and their Yorkies who frequently walk on Ridge Road and the surrounding area are a definite traffic hazard. When a car comes up behind them and another car is coming toward them, they make no effort to move over. There are many other places more appropriate than Ridge Road to walk and exercise their dogs. These roads are curving, narrow and heavily traveled. People in this area are fed up with the inconsiderate Yorkie patrol.

Let's eat

HOORAY TO the sausage vendors. It's true that downtown Cape Girardeau doesn't have enough places to eat late at night.

Broadway concerns

THIS MESSAGE is directed to the owners of buildings on Broadway and also to the city fathers. Why can't we do something to clean up Broadway? Broadway has become a slum. I'm asking Mayor Jay Knudtson and the city council to look into this and see if there's not something we could do to condemn some of these buildings. We shouldn't let this get any worse or it's going to destroy our image and what we're trying to do with the downtown area.

Thanks for purse

TO THE person who found and turned in the beige purse left in a grocery cart in the Wal-Mart parking lot last Friday evening: Bless you and thank you.

Music in the park

I WANT to thank Jerry Swan with the Traveling Acoustic Mic for organizing all the wonderful music for the spring fling at Arena Park Saturday. It was such a good time, and the music was great.
