The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Patrol, the county's law enforcement reserve unit, has rejected a proposal by Sheriff Dwight Thomas outlining duties and responsibilities of its members under his administration.

The Missouri State Highway and Transportation Commission has given its official OK to the widening of U.S. 61 between the U.S. 61 and 25 intersection and Interstate 55.

50 years ago: Feb. 26, 1960

Weber Gilmore, 40, a Sikeston, Mo., lawyer and former prosecuting attorney of Scott County, was forced to land his airplane on the state thruway about 15 miles east of Buffalo, N.Y., yesterday in a blinding snowstorm; Gilmore, accompanied by Alfred J. Ryan, 31, also of Sikeston, said he was running low on fuel, and the thruway was his only alternative.

Jim Stovall of Superior Concretors recently reported the theft of five cast iron manhole frame covers from the site of a sewer construction job on Bloomfield Road; the covers are valued at $166.60.

75 years ago: Feb. 26, 1935

A major part of the needed right of way for improved Highway 25 from Jackson north to the Perry County line at Old Appleton has been secured; plans now are to pave the highway with concrete; the project is expected to be approved for that type of surfacing and the work done this year.

Bill Sullivan will again manage the Capahas baseball team this season; early training will begin in April, or late March if the weather is favorable.

100 years ago: Feb. 26, 1910

Louis E. Moeder, who up until a year or more ago was a trusted lieutenant with the Houck railroad system, but who has been in St. Louis for the past year with the Kennard & Sons' Carpet Co., arrived in Cape Girardeau last night for a visit with the home folks; Moeder plans to move to Texas, where he has accepted a position with A.R. Ponder's road, the Crystal City & Uvalde Railway.

Postmaster E.W. Flentge has received orders from the Treasury Department to have the water and light company install meters and make water and light connections with the new federal building; the electric fixtures have all be installed.
