PARK HILLS, Mo. (AP) -- Gov. Jay Nixon was heading to eastern Missouri on Thursday to announce grants for two colleges and a grant to help build a Mississippi River port.

A "Training for Tomorrow" grant to Mineral Area Community College in Park Hills will go toward a program to help paramedics earn associate degrees in nursing.

East Central College in Union was also receiving a "Training for Tomorrow" grant. The school will use the funds to develop programs for emerging industries in Franklin County, including culinary arts and health information technology.

Nixon also planned a stop in Ste. Genevieve to announce a grant to help pay for construction of the Port of New Bourbon. The improved port will be able to remain open during periods of flooding.
