The Southeast Missouri State softball team had a rough weekend, losing all four of its games at the annual Missouri Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament in Columbia, Mo.

In action Saturday, Southeast (4-7) was beaten by host Missouri 13-0 and Missouri State 7-3. Missouri is ranked third and fourth in the two major national polls.

Friday's action saw Southeast fall to Missouri-Kansas City 7-1 and Saint Louis 10-2.

The Redhawks had five hits against Missouri, led by Shelby Stein with two. Stefanie Barnes took the loss. Southeast committed three errors, which led to nine unearned runs for the Tigers.

Southeast again had five hits against Missouri State, with freshman Marisa Sanders belting her team-leading second home run of the season. Whitney Dupuis took the loss.

Against UMKC, Shelby Stein had two of Southeast's three hits. Barnes suffered the loss as Southeast allowed five unearned runs.

Nicole Troncoso had three of Southeast's seven hits against Saint Louis. Alex Ramirez added two hits. Dupuis took the loss.

Southeast, which has played its first 11 games away from Cape Girardeau, opens its home schedule Wednesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne (IPFW).

Track fares well

The Southeast track and field teams recorded three runner-up finishes at Saturday's Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

Brandon Colbert was second in the weight throw with a distance of 62 feet 6 1/2 inches. It was his eighth top-five finish in the event this season. He also placed sixth in the shot put (56-2) with his second-best throw of the season.

Josh Uchtman was the runner-up in the shot put (57-9) for his seventh top-five finish in that event this season.

Ashley Brewer placed second in the women's shot put (49-3) with her second-best distance of the season. She has five top-five finishes in that event.

Southeast's only other competitor was freshman Jerika Lewis. She finished eighth in the 400 meters (56.41 seconds).

Uchtman and Colbert rank in the top 20 nationally in the shot put and weight throw, respectively. Both have surpassed the NCAA provisional mark in their specialties and now wait to see if they will qualify for next weekend's NCAA indoor championships.

Big gymnastics meet

The Southeast gymnastics team will have its biggest home meet of the season today.

Southeast's only competition of the year at the Show Me Center, the Outback Invitational also featuring Missouri and Alaska, will begin at 2 p.m.

The Redhawks, 11-2 overall and 6-0 in the Midwest Independent Conference, are ranked 34th nationally.

Missouri (8-2, 0-2 Big 12 Conference) is 18th and coming off a season-high score of 196.875.

The Tigers are led by senior All-American Sarah Shire, who recently set a school record in the all-around with a 39.725. Shire has six all-around titles this season to go with 17 in her career.

All youngsters 14 and under get in for free today. Also, 27 former Southeast gymnasts plan to be in attendance during Alumni Weekend.
