Central junior Blake Driskell won the medalist honors Monday in the Class 4 District 1 golf tournament at Quail Creek in south St. Louis.

Driskell, a junior, was the only golfer to break 80, shooting a 78 on the par-72 course.

"There were a lot of high scores," Central coach Dick Wadlington said. "It was 38 degrees when they started and windy, and that course is very hard. When Poplar Bluff doesn't have anyone break 80, you know it's hard."

Poplar Bluff won the district tournament and secured the automatic team bid for the state tournament. The Mules, who finished third in the state last year, scored a 329. Oakville was second at 336, and Central tied Cedar Hill Northwest for third at 338. Jackson finished sixth at 365.

Central had another state qualifier in Kirk Lohmann, who finished fourth with an 81.

"We're proud of both kids," Wadlington said. "They've both been very steady, and they will represent Cape Girardeau well in Bolivar."

The state tournament will be May 16 and 17 at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar.

Jackson did not have a state qualifier. Ryan Mouser posted an 88 to lead the Indians.

Class 3 District 1

Notre Dame finished third in the district golf tournament at Eagle Ridge in Farmington, Mo., and advanced two golfers to the state tournament.

Jonathan Blattel shot a 78 on the par-72 course and Will Lindman fired an 83 to make the top 10.

Notre Dame scored 344 as a team, finishing 14 strokes behind district champ North County and eight behind runner-up Farmington. Farmington's Barrett Belew was the medalist with a 75.

Weather conditions were a factor in Farmington as well. "It was sunny but the wind was icy cold and it really affected some shots," Notre Dame coach Jerry Grim said.

The Class 3 state tournament is May 16 and 17 at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield.

BASEBALL Delta 8, Richland 6

Chase Rhodes hit two home runs, including a two-run walkoff blast in the bottom of the seventh that lifted Delta to its third win of the season.

After Jerry Seabaugh tied the game with a two-out RBI single, Rhodes capped a four-run inning with his second two-run homer. Rhodes also homered in a four-run Delta third.

Cody Crowden picked up the win with two innings of two-hit relief.

Seabaugh finished 3-for-4, while Caleb Guilliams and Rhodes also had two hits.

Alex Armbruster had two hits, including a double, and picked up his first pitching decision of the season at Hillsboro Grandview.

Armbruster allowed two hits and struck out 12 in seven innings.

Brian Buchheit hit a home run for the Indians (5-6), who scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning.

St. Vincent has won four in a row and five of their last six.

Woodland scored six runs in the first inning and led 6-4 heading into the sixth inning before visiting Charleston erupted for 15 runs in the final two innings.

Anthony Grojean took the loss for Woodland (3-11).

Jacob Gillis drove in two runs for Woodland in the first inning, when Woodland scored six runs on four hits and three walks.

Charleston's Dustin McCann allowed just one hit and one walk the rest of the way to pick up his first win.

Advance scored 13 runs on just four hits as it secured the Stoddard County Conference title with a win at home. In handing Dexter its first conference loss, the Hornets improved to 5-0 in conference play and 9-2 overall.

Winning pitcher Alicia Broshuis struck out 10 batters, walked five and allowed four hits. Broshuis also went 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Hornets took advantage of eight walks.

Notre Dame scored a goal in each half and used a shutout performance from sophomore goalkeeper Claudia Brauss to pick up a road victory.

Meridith Medlin provided the only goal the Bulldogs needed 21 minutes into the game with an assist from Casey Crawford.

Perryville (7-8) nearly tied the game just seconds before halftime, but Brauss managed to get her fingertips on a Pirates shot that deflected into the post and back into her hands. It was one of 14 saves by Brauss.

Paige Schumer scored for Notre Dame (8-7-2) midway through the second half.

Mehlville 2, St. Vincent 0

The Squaws were shut out on the road.

Goalkeeper Michelle Herzog made 11 saves for St. Vincent (10-10).

Central won all but one singles match in a home victory over Poplar Bluff.

BOYS TRACK Kelly Invitational

Brandon Etzold won two events and was on two first-place relay teams to lead Saxony Lutheran to a second-place finish behind New Madrid County Central in the 10-team meet.

Etzold, a sophomore, showed his endurance by winning the longest events on the track -- the 3,200- and 1,600-meter runs. He also was on the first-place 1,600 relay team with Max Wieser, Trey Maevers and Grant Lehmann. The same foursome ran the 1,600 relay in 3 minutes, 39 seconds. Etzold helped Saxony take over first place with a 52-second split in the third leg.

Saxony's Tim Lorenz won the shot put by breaking 42 feet for the first time all year and posting a 42-4.
