Illinois State banged out 16 hits and scored 10 unanswered runs Thursday as it defeated the Southeast Missouri State softball team 12-1 at the Southeast Softball Complex.
Illinois State (10-8) scored in all five innings, including two runs in the first. Southeast sliced the lead in half in the bottom of the first with an unearned run, but the Redbirds got the run back in the second, then followed that with three three-run innings.
Stefanie Barnes (2-5) pitched all five innings for Southeast. She struck out four and walked one.
Illinois State pitcher Jordan Birch allowed just two hits to improve to 4-5. She struck out eight and walked two.
Carmen Fowler singled for Southeast (5-8) in the first inning and Melissa Walker singled in the third.
The Southeast tennis team opened its Ohio Valley Conference schedule with a 7-0 home loss to Murray State.
The Racers (3-4 overall, 1-0 OVC) swept all six singles matches in two sets against Southeast(1-7, 0-1).
