Dense fog Tuesday morning canceled classes at Kelly School District and caused a traffic accident in Cape Girardeau County. The district had delayed the start time of classes by one hour two separate times Tuesday. But as the district's maintenance men and school resource officer surveyed the area later in the morning, school officials decided to call off classes for the day. "As they were driving in our area, they thought it would be a safety issue to try and have classes," said Dan Hecht, principal of the middle school. "That's always our No. 1 priority, to get the kids here safely." The dense fog was responsible for at least one automobile accident. At 6:45 a.m. a vehicle was traveling on Cape Girardeau County Road 316 near County Road 318 when it struck a utility pole. Crews blocked off a section of the roadway while they repaired the pole. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. Though a dense fog advisory issued had expired by 9 a.m., areas of fog continued to linger into the late morning.
