Cape Girardeau County AARP 4041

The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP 4041 met May 2. AARP is celebrating its 45th anniversary this month.

AARP members will help with a blood drive on May 25.

Those members who do volunteer work were recognized: Glenda Quinn, Community Service Award; Bob Harper, Andrus Award; and Grace Hoover, Appreciation Award. AARP Calling Committee members were recognized and given certificates for their help. Committee members are Helen Leimbach, Pat Best, Muriel Day, Opal Perkins, Bea Foster, Ann Smith and Linda Jenkins-Rechtin.

Musical entertainment was provided by Brucie Woods, Ben Shell and Al Mitchner.

The next meeting will be on June 6 and will include a tour of the Marquette Towers.

New Salem UMW

The New Salem United Methodist Women of Daisy met in the church fellowship hall on May 4 and held the mother/daughter/friend banquet.

The program was the Grand Ole Opry and Hee Haw presented by the following ladies, Shirley Grebe, Betty Hahs, Dorothy Hahs, Margie Roberts, Colleen Lukefahr, Barbara Brown, Jackie Kurre, Betty Henry, Verla Mangels, Roberta Seabaugh and Patsy Ford. A Southern-style meal was served.

The next meeting will be the birthday celebration to be held on June 1 in the fellowship hall.

Exchange Club

The Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau met April 5 and 19.

Ferd Sturm introduced the students of the month at the April 5 meeting. They are, March -- Alison Martin from Notre Dame Regional High School; April -- Becke Thole from Saxony Lutheran High School; and May -- Olivia Swingle from Central High School.

At the April 19 meeting, the minutes and treasurer's report were read and approved. Members voted to discontinue the club effective the last day of June due to lack of membership. The LSAT meeting will be held June 21 at Cape County Park South, shelter 20. The meal will be catered and awards will be presented.

Xi Nu Phi

The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met May 3. Hostess was Kathy Kiefner.

A discussion was held about a float trip in June at Current River and the possibility of attending The Muny in St. Louis.

The chapter's pledges of the year are Mary Stuart and Sharon Hinkebein. The chapter girl of the year is Linda Biri.

The chapter yardstick was discussed, and it will be completed and submitted to international.

Installation of officers was held. The program was on knitting.

The next meeting will be Tuesday at the home of Debbie Balsano. Secret pal names will be revealed at this meeting and members are to bring food and secret pal gifts.

Lamplighters FCE

Karen McLane was the hostess for the April 21 meeting of the Lamplighters FCE Club. Members wore decorated hats and gave a short explanation and history of the hat.

JoAnn Hahs, president, suggested getting together to make totes to hold table favors for an upcoming state district meeting.

A report was given on efforts to collect petition signatures for the "Tune Out Violence" campaign.

A third-place yellow ribbon was received by the club for the 2004 Scrapbook of Events at the All Clubs Day held on March 28.

Nine members attended the spring district meeting luncheon held April 19 at Sedgwickville, Mo. The club participated in the Oak Ridge community garage sale, which was held Saturday.

Programs were given by Dorothy Hahs on "shadow applique" and by JoAnn Hahs on "making plans to travel."

The next meeting will be held May 19.
