Cape lawyer charged with assault will get jury trial in August

A Cape Girardeau lawyer accused of threatening to kill his fiancee by holding an unloaded firearm to her head will not appear in court again until August when his case is heard before a jury.

Scott Reynolds, charged with first- and second-degree assault, child endangerment and possession of marijuana, will appear again before visiting Jefferson County Circuit Judge Robert Wilkins for a three-day jury trial Aug. 10 through 12 at the Cape Girardeau County Courthouse.

Reynolds is accused of choking and punching his fiancee, Jacqueline Carter, on Feb. 17 at a residence they shared in Jackson.

Carter testified at Reynolds' preliminary hearing that the incident occurred after the couple fought over text messages and phone calls Reynolds made to an ex-girlfriend's sister. The argument and alleged assault occurred in front of Carter's 6-year-old daughter, according to her testimony.

Carter said when she tried to grab her daughter and leave the residence Reynolds held an unloaded gun to her head and pulled the trigger five times.

In mid-March Wilkins granted Reynolds a change in his bond conditions, allowing his $125,000 bond to be posted in cash or with the help of a professional bondsman. Reynolds was also to be monitored by a GPS system 24 hours a day once he posted bond. He bonded out of jail less than two hours after his March 17 hearing.

As part of his modified bond conditions, Reynolds has been allowed to maintain his practice and represent clients.
