Dr Frank Nickell, director of the Center of Regional History at Southeast Missouri State University, presented a program about the Argus Newspaper which was in Cape Girardeau from 1863 to 1871. This old newspaper held a bounty of information about the time of Civil War in Cape Girardeau and will be online in the future...

Nancy Hunter NSDAR

The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met March 24 in the Penzel Conference Room at Cape Girardeau Public Library for their educational program. Dr Frank Nickell, director of the Center of Regional History at Southeast Missouri State University, presented a program about the Argus Newspaper which was in Cape Girardeau from 1863 to 1871. This old newspaper held a bounty of information about the time of Civil War in Cape Girardeau and will be online in the future.

Ruth Lang, regent, opened the business meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and the DAR rituals.

Jeannine McGinnis gave the national defense report and Lang presented the President General's message.

Dorothy Points, treasurer, gave the budget report and Catherine Allison, secretary, read the minutes from the last meeting. Both were accepted.

Charlotte Slinkard, Sheila Holloway and Points were appointed as nominating committee of officers for the upcoming year and to update the old by laws.

Points suggested the club invite Vivian Rains, the ladies' administrator at the Missouri Veterans Home to be our guest at our May meeting at the Cape Girardeau Country Club.

The next meeting will be held April 28 at Southeast Missouri State University River Campus with tour of Ansel Adams Masterworks, which will be followed by fellowship and dessert at Port Cape Girardeau.

Tilsit 4-H Club

The March 5 meeting of the Tilsit 4H Club was held at Immaculate Conception Church basement and Ryan Aufdenberg, president, called the meeting order. Pledges were lead by Caleb Aufdenberg and Zach Aufdenberg. Roll call was "What nickname would you like to have?" Plans were made for a roller skating party and a bowling party. Kelly Crites gave a talk, "A public speaking outline" and Brian McNeeley gave a demonstration on "How to make apple crisp." After the meeting, we made Easter decorations for area nursing homes.

Young Americans 4-H Club

The March 18 meeting of the Young Americans 4-H Club was held at Grace United Methodist Church and called to order by Tori Schweer.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Gary Schweer while Tyler Kirchdoerfer led the 4-H Pledge.

Alex Eftink and Clayton Kirchdoerfer led the club in singing. Roll call was answered by "What is your favorite cookie?" There were 15 members and 11 adults in attendance.

The February minutes were read and Gary Schweer made a motion to approve them with a second from Alex Eftink.

Project reports were made by Alex Eftink on bucket calf and field crops.

Dortha's Day Camp for Clover Kids will be held June 6. The Theme is "Pirates of Cape County North." The applications will be sent to the University of Missouri Extension Office, for them to mailed to the Clover Kids, to be due by May 1.

Kandy Peek is checking with John Watkins on a doing a tour of his farm as a Conservation Activity in May.

Strack announced she had Cabbage Plants, if anyone would like some.

Conner Propst had an illustrated talk on "how to take care of baby goats" and Clayton Kirchdoerfer gave a talk on "dairy cow facts".

Members enjoyed decorating plastic eggs and making bunnies out of plastic spoons. Refreshments were provided by the Eftink and Smith-Rainey Families.

Grace United Methodist Women

UMW mission meeting met with 16 members present. Margaret Zieba presided over the meeting which began with a recognition of our missionaries and a prayer. Minutes were read and approved and the treasurer's report was given. Zieba thanked the group for her nomination for the 2010 District Woman in Mission of the Year for which she was chosen at the district meeting in Daisy on March 20.

Margaret Dement announced plans and program for the May banquet to be held on May 4. Julie Walker will be providing the program of musical entertainment. Morning circle will be hostesses, the evening circle will provide room set-up, and everyone will help clean afterwards.

Opal Collins and Wilma Copeland have read some of the books in the reading program.

It was reported that we earned approximately $2,000 at the March basement sale. Half of that money goes to the SEMO Food Bank. Items that were left were distributed to St. Vincent de Paul's clothes closet, Safe House for Women, Teen Challenge Thirft Store, and Good Will.

Jean Sander reported that the sewing group is making bags for 100 school kits. Discussion was held on the proper filling of these bags.

Alice Niswonger presented a very interesting program on "human trafficking." Discussion followed regarding our concerns of what we can do about it.
