Trash savings

THE new trash pickup service in Cape Girardeau in the first year is supposed to save $21,000. Will the city use the savings to reduce our water and sewer bills? Or will it be put away so that we never know what happened to it?

Helping patients

IN response to the health care workers who have been verbally abused: I agree everyone should show respect to caregivers. However, there are some times the caregiver is not open-minded or doesn't seem to hear the needs of the patient. The patient may be going through some rough times.

U.S. people in need

I voted for President Obama because I thought he was the best choice. He had promised he would end the war in Iraq within a year. But we are still there, wasting trillions of dollars while the U.S. is in such a mess. Let's help the United States first. People are out of work. Some people don't know where their next meal is coming from. People are losing their homes. Can it get much worse before our politicians wake up we've got to pull together to help our own people?

On the job

A caller chided critics of President Obama by asking us how good we were at our first job. This isn't Obama's first job. I certainly hope, though, that this term is his last job as public servant.

District flaws

TODAY my husband and I put our house on the market so we will no longer have to pay taxes to the Cape Girardeau School District. Our children will go to a private school next fall. This district has lied to the community repeatedly in order to get bond issues passed, and this time it asked for money to do things it promised would be done with the last batch of money. It also will add classrooms to a high school that is relatively new and which was supposed to have additional rooms when built, but the district ran out of money because of screwups in the plans brought about by administrators who are still on staff. A building that, in order to promote a previous bond issue, we were told was condemned and couldn't be renovated has been renovated by a private company. The district routinely ignores parental concerns, rewards coaches who are failing miserably to honorably and ethically guide our students, and overpays administrators who cannot do their job and must then have highly paid consultants do it for them. The district is shrinking in size, but classrooms are supposedly needed. Well, you will now lose three more children, and I anticipate more might leave as well. Cape Girardeau voters were like sheep who followed the wolf in sheep's clothing.

City access

CHILDREN in the south part of Cape Girardeau will have the same access to the new water park as those in the other parts. We live in the northern part of Cape Girardeau, and I will have to drive my children to the new water park, just as parents in the southern part of Cape Girardeau will have to drive theirs. If the people in the south part of Cape Girardeau want things to be built in that area of town, they first need to show that they can take care of what's there. Nobody is going to build a nice facility in a rundown area where drug-dealing takes place openly on the sidewalk and where, when the police try to do something, the residents fight the police. Stop blaming the city and look at your neighbors. That's the reason your neighborhoods are in the shape they are, and don't get any better.

Party and religion

I am amazed by how many times I get asked, "How can you be a Christian and be a Democrat? Neither party is a Christian party. They each have liars, cheaters, thieves and sex scandals. But my answer to this question is this: The same way in which a person who is a Republican worships material possessions, uses God's name in vain, goes fishing or plays golf on Sunday instead of going to church, does not get along with his parents, condones the death penalty and promotes or starts a war, has sex out of marriage, divorces his spouse and remarries again and again, tells lies and spreads false rumors about someone (a favorite practice of conservative talk radio) and desires his friend or neighbor's material possessions. Voting Republican does not make you a Christian or sin free, so please stop casting stones at those who view things differently than your do.

Traffic cops

I get so tired of driving on Highway 25 south to Route K past South Elementary School in the mornings. There are several traffic-cop drivers who take it upon themselves to stop traffic on a state highway while they let side traffic onto the highway. If they would let the highway traffic pass through, the side traffic would be able get out on its own, and traffic wouldn't build up on the highway. Something needs to be done.
