Bonnie Edwards benefit will feature live music Saturday at Arena Building
A benefit will be held for Bonnie Edwards, a local woman and Southeast Missourian associate struggling with cancer, will be held Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Arena Building. The event will feature music by Mid-Life Crisis, a 50/50 raffle, dance contest and silent auction. Tickets may be purchased at the door.
River City Players announce cast of dinner-theater musical review
The River City Players Community Theatre has chosen a cast and begun rehearsals for its next production, "The World Goes Round -- The Songs of Kander and Ebb." The show is a musical review of the shows of John Kander and Fred Ebb, including famous works like "Cabaret," "Chicago" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman." The show will run June 17-18 and 22-25 at the River City Yacht Club above Port Cape Girardeau. All are dinner theater dates except for show-only performances June 22 and 23. The cast includes Pam Bell, Meagan Edmonds, Regina Hagen, Kathy Heckman, Bryan Parker, Curtis Prichard, Michelle Prichard, Blake Russell and Kyle VanPool. To reserve tickets, call 334-0954.
Smith to lecture on Lewis and Clark Tuesday at Cape Girardeau library
Jeffrey Smith, a professor from St. Louis, will present a Lewis and Clark lecture, "William Clark, Interpreted," Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Hirsch Community Room in the Cape Girardeau Public Library. The event is free and open to the public. For more information call 334-5279. Smith plays the part of a Clark in late life looking back on his experiences with the Corps of Discovery.
Southeast university theater professor to publish book on dance criticism
Dr. Marc Strauss, a professor of theater and dance at Southeast Missouri State University, will have his third book published this fall by McFarland and Company Inc., a publisher of books on the fine arts, dance, film and related arts. The book is titled "The Dance Criticism of Arlene Croce: Articulating a Vision of Artistry, 1973-1987." Strauss's book examines the essays of Croce, a prominent dance critic for The New Yorker magazine through the 1990s.

NPR's 'Morning Edition' to begin at new time for KRCU's morning audience
National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" news program now begins at 5 a.m. on 90.9 FM KRCU, instead of the previous 6 a.m. The time was changed to better suit the station's morning audience. KRCU is National Public Radio's Cape Girardeau affiliate.
Three nights of western swing music coming to Cape Girardeau on Thursday
The Western Swing Music Society of the Southwest will present three nights of music starting Thursday at the Cape Girardeau VFW Post on Kingshighway. The event will feature several bands. Thursday night's show runs from 4 to 11 p.m., the May 27 show runs from 1 to 11 p.m. and the May 28 show runs from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday night is free, while Friday and Saturday nights there is a cost. Dexter man publishes memoir of his Army experience in Vietnam
Micheal I. Hobbs, a native of Dexter, Mo., has published a book with a small Missouri press called Sweetgum Press, out of Warrensburg, Mo. The book is called "Through Eyes of Stone" and documents Hobbs' time spent as an Army soldier in Vietnam. The book was originally intended for free distribution to veterans organizations but has sold well in small bookstores. For more information on the book, visit www.sweetgumpress.com. The book is currently available at local libraries and Hastings in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Blues Fest in Illinois Saturday
MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- Shawnee Cave Amphitheater, an outdoor venue seven miles south of Murphysboro on Highway 127, will host a Blues Fest Saturday starting at 3 p.m. The festival will feature blues acts like Shakey Jake, the Rich Fabec Band and Southeast Missouri's Fusion Blue. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the gate and are available at P-Mac Music in Cape Girardeau. Price includes camping. For more information call (618) 687-9663.
