* Top-seeded Nathalie Dechy of France lost in the semifinals of the Strasbourg International on Friday, beaten by Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-4, 6-1.

Medina Garrigues will play Marta Domachowska of Poland for the title of this clay-court tuneup for the French Open, which begins Monday. Domachowska defeated Dally Randriantefy of Madagascar 6-3, 6-3.

College

* Kansas shooting guard J.R. Giddens was released from a hospital Friday morning, a day after being stabbed in the leg in a fight outside a bar.

Police were still reviewing the case, and a prosecutor said it could be next week before any charges are filed.

Giddens, 20, was stabbed in the right calf early Thursday morning during a fight in the parking lot the Moon Bar, about one mile from campus. Five other people, including the man police believe stabbed Giddens, also were injured.

Hockey

* The NHL and the players' union met for eight more hours Friday, but parted with no specific time to talk again.

The sides negotiated for 22 hours over two days in New York, and plan to get together again sometime next week, although that hasn't been worked out yet between NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and players' association executive director Bob Goodenow.

Olympics

* Jailed IOC vice president Kim Un-yong resigned from the Olympic body Friday rather than face an expulsion vote in July.

The 74-year-old Kim, currently serving a two-year prison term on embezzlement and bribery charges in South Korea, has been suspended from the International Olympic Committee for more than a year.

Kim, a member of the IOC since 1986, had been one of the most powerful figures in the Olympic movement.

Tennis

* The French Open lost some of its luster Friday when former champion Serena Williams pulled out hours before the draw.

Williams, who sprained her left ankle in early April, said she still hasn't recovered enough to play this Grand Slam event, which starts Monday.

* Top-seeded Venus Williams beat Bulgaria's Tszvetana Pironkova 6-1, 6-3 Friday despite numerous errors on a windy day to reach the Istanbul Cup final.

She will play for the title today against Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic. Vaidisova, seeded second, defeated third-seeded Anna Smashnova of Israel 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the other semifinal of this $200,000 clay-court tuneup for the French Open, which starts Monday.
