KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A federal judge in Chicago has denied H&R Block Inc.'s proposal to settle a class-action lawsuit over its tax-refund loans for $360 million, the Kansas City-based company said Friday.

The judge suggested both sides try again with an independent mediator. The judge rejected a proposed settlement in 2003.

Company spokeswoman Linda McDougall said H&R Block will now prepare for the case going to trial this October.
