Moderate flooding continues on Mississippi, other rivers

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Rivers throughout Missouri remain swollen from a rainy May, with more rain in the forecast for later this week.

The National Weather Service on Tuesday reported moderate flooding on sections of the Mississippi, Missouri and Grand rivers. The water level has declined markedly on the Fabius in northeast Missouri and the Meramec near St. Louis.

The crest was upgraded in Cape Girardeau, where the Mississippi is now expected to reach 40 feet by Saturday -- or 8 feet above flood stage. No significant damage is expected.

The Missouri State Emergency Management Agency says 16 state roads are closed due to flooding. Two people died in flash floods last week, both in northeast Missouri.
