PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. -- Police in the Bootheel said twin 2-year-old girls have been found dead inside a hot car in Portageville.

Police chief Ronnie Adams said all the windows in the car were rolled up when someone discovered the dead toddlers late Wednesday afternoon. Police said the deaths appeared to be heat-related.

The car was parked at an apartment complex in Portageville.

Adams said it wasn't known how the little girls got inside the car. Their parents and grandparents were talking to investigators at the police station Wednesday evening.

Temperatures in the area were in the upper 80s to low 90s Wednesday afternoon.
