According to Cape Girardeau County Sheriff Dwight Thomas, the man who escaped from the county jail in Jackson Saturday was spotted yesterday driving an older model car at the Kentucky Oaks Mall in Paducah.

As it is being razed with a backhoe, the building at 418 Broadway collapses, part of the debris landing on the hood of a car; the building, owned by Union Electric and the law firm of Oliver, Oliver, Waltz and Cook, is being demolished in preparation for construction of a parking lot on the site, adjacent to the H.-H. Building.

50 years ago: July 1, 1960

Planning is being initiated for the financing of the proposed sewage disposal system ordered by the federal government and the Missouri Water Pollution Board; contact is being made with the consulting engineers who drafted the preliminary engineering report for the system to determine if there are any cost changes since the report was issued.

Dr. and Mrs. J. Marshall Jung and son David have arrived in Illmo and will formally open the medical center there on Tuesday; Dr. Jung, 26, was selected from among many applicants by the local committee and the Sears Foundation, which assisted the local group in bringing a physician to the community.

75 years ago: July 1, 1935

Professor J.A. Whiteford concludes his 11-year service as superintendent of the Cape Girardeau public schools; he is succeeded by Louis J. Schultz.

Fred A. Groves takes over as president of the Rotary Club, a position held during the last year by Dr. W.W. Parker.

100 years ago: July 1, 1910

No more moving-picture shows on Sundays; the Cape Girardeau City Council passes a stringent Sunday law preventing the giving of any kind of exhibitions whatever in this city on the first day of the week.

The Cape Girardeau City Council is unanimous in its support of a proposition presented by I.R. Kelso, president of the Commercial Club, that the city should have a park or parks.
