Cape County Recorder: Incumbent Robert leads in fundraising

In the contest for Cape Girardeau County Recorder of Deeds, incumbent Democrat Janet Robert posted a lead in fundraising on the strength of $2,570 in contributions and a $5,000 loan to her own campaign fund as she awaits the winner of the Republican primary.

The two GOP contenders, Scott R. Clark and Shelly Lane, both reported taking in less than $5,000 total. Clark funded his campaign effort almost entirely on a $4,000 personal loan and Lane collected $2,000 from labor unions out of the $3,231 she raised.

Robert is one of three Democratic officeholders in Cape Girardeau County. She was appointed to the office in 1977 by then-Gov. Joe Teasdale and is seeking her ninth full term. She will face either Clark or Lane in the first contested election for her office since 1994.

In reports covering April 1 through June 30, Robert said she spent $2,256, most if it for printing campaign materials. Robert had $5,313 in the bank on July 1.

Clark reported receiving $300 in contributions, but did not name any contributors because the amounts were less than $100 from any single donor. His $4,000 personal loan to the campaign allowed him to spend $1,860, mostly to purchase campaign signs and advertising. Clark reported having $2,439 on hand.

Lane reported spending $2,302, much of it on campaign signs and materials.

The Republican primary is Aug. 3.
