Dave Howard, owner of Howard's Athletic Goods, 900 Broadway, has announced the "conditional" sale of Howard's to Troy Slinkard and Terry Slattery, both of whom have been associated with the business for several years.

The new Purple Crackle in East Cape Girardeau, Ill., is set to open Wednesday evening; the new building replaces one which was destroyed by fire March 23, 1984.

BENTON, Mo. -- Many former residents of Benton and visitors of the surrounding area expected tomorrow and Saturday for the centennial celebration observing the founding of the town; numerous events are planned for both days, the highlight being the presentation of the Centennial Pageant each evening.

Continental Trailways will move its station facilities from 30 S. Spanish St., to the Union Bus Depot at 16 N. Frederick St., on Sunday; Greyhound Lines has also announced its removal from the Spanish Street depot to the Alvardo building at Broadway and Kingshighway.

The Rev. H.F. Gerecke, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Gerecke of Cape Girardeau, and executive secretary of the St. Louis City Mission Association, preaches in the afternoon at Zion Lutheran Church, near Gordonville.

Preaching at the union service at Courthouse Park in the evening is the Rev. R.M. Talbert, secretary of the Southeast Missouri district of Christian Churches; R.P. Smith sings a solo at the service.

100 years ago: July 28, 1910

Directors of the Water and Light Co. and the street car company -- W.H. Harrison, W.H. Miller, L.S. Joseph and Dr. J.D. Porterfield -- returned last night from Chicago, where they were in conference with representatives of a New York firm which is interested in buying the two plants and consolidating them.

The Gordonville school board has decided to add another grade to the school work done in the public schools, which will allow pupils to get through the ninth grade without leaving home.
