25 years ago: Aug. 3, 1985

Once again, the sound of the carillon, housed in Academic Hall, is heard on the campus; the musical instrument, a gift of the late Fred Naeter in 1962, had been silenced for about six months by repairs.

Lt. William G. "Dub" Wilson retired from the Cape Girardeau Police Department yesterday, ending a 28-year career in law enforcement; Wilson was employed by the department in 1957 after serving a year as a reserve police officer.

50 years ago: Aug. 3, 1960

The Kroger store at 724 Broadway will close permanently following the conclusion of the day's business this Saturday night; the new Kroger supermarket, in the Town Plaza Shopping Center, is set to open Aug. 11.

In a relatively spirited primary yesterday, particularly on the Democratic ticket where competition was strong in four contested county races, Cape Girardeau County voters picked candidates and drew up battle lines for the November general election; the closest race was for the county assessor on the Democratic ticket; Harry Andrews holds a 124-vote lead over his closest opponent, Irvin Hobbs.

75 years ago: Aug. 3, 1935

Joy W. Kistler, former Central College football and basketball star and since 1931 director of athletics and coach of the University of Iowa high school athletic teams, has been hired as basketball coach and assistant football coach at State College.

Five members were added to the faculty of State College by the Board of Regents yesterday: W.A. Buckner, science department; True Taylor, social sciences; the Rev. Ralph E. Weisser, German language; Evelyn Waddle, nurse, and Joy W. Kistler, athletics.

100 years ago: Aug. 3, 1910

The official election returns for the entire county are locked up in the county clerk's office in Jackson; Tuesday's vote was the quietest ever held in Cape Girardeau County, there being only a few contests to attract attention; the surprise of the day was the apparent win by Albert Spradling over Lee Bowman for prosecuting attorney on the Democratic ballot.

Mayor M.E. Leming has departed for Michigan, where he will join his family for the summer.
