In response to current heat advisories, the Southeast Missouri chapter of the American Red Cross announced the opening of two city government-run cooling centers in Cape Girardeau, according to an organization news release. The National Weather Service has issued a heat warning for large parts of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois lasting until 7 p.m. Wednesday. The heat index is predicted to reach between 110 and 115 degrees through the next two days.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat warning for large parts of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois lasting until 7 p.m. Wednesday. The heat index is predicted to reach between 110 and 115 degrees through the next two days.

Temperatures for the rest of the week will be in the 90s. The National Weather Service forecasts a high of 100 degrees at Cape Girardeau today and Wednesday.

Heat of this magnitude can result in the quick onset of heat related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
