Heat compassion

I want to say a big thank you to all the companies that have been letting their workers off early because of the high heat index. It is appreciated that you are so compassionate to your employees.

Senior benefits

WHY do we not hear any rumbles about how the U.S. government is not giving senior citizens a cost-of-living increase in their Social Security checks? Not only that, there is talk of reducing Social Security benefits. I want to stress that I am not the only citizen who is alarmed at this news. Most of the elderly who have worked all their lives have paid into a program that is in jeopardy. Who's going to speak up for us? I am an 85-year-old Army veteran of World War II.

City, county snobs

THE online forum includes a lot of comments from city and county residents who talk bad about those who do not live in Cape Girardeau or in Cape Girardeau County. I remember when a TV reporter said Cape Girardeau does not have a drug problem. Others say that would not happen in the city or county. You do not have the perfect town or county. Those who do not live there but shop there can spend money elsewhere. That would cause another tax increase for those who are snobs like the ones I mentioned.

Diminished chances

THE chance of the Republican Party taking control of the U.S. Senate has been slightly diminished by Charlie Crist's conversion to Independent in Florida and Sharon Angle's sanity-challenged ranting and raving in incumbent Sen. Harry Reid's Nevada.

LAY off the robo-callers. I have no life. At least they add something.
